Research Suggests that Verbal Abuse Hinders Brain Development

eupraxsophy:

I’ve long argued that verbal abuse, contrary to popular belief, can in some ways be as psychologically harmful as the physical kind. As high-functioning and emotional creatures who are fundamentally shaped by our social relations and environment, we can suffer terribly from this kind of mistreatment. It affects us in profound ways that can’t simply be resolved by “toughening up” or “getting over it.”

Indeed, the typical “solution” for the victim is to either cope through unhealthy means (drugs, self-harm, etc) or, most commonly, to take their anger and sense of inferiority out on others. Known as displaced aggression, this leads to a sort of pay-it -forward approach to violence - as you were treated badly, so to will you treat others badly, and that person will in turn abuse others, and so on. It’s a horrific and vicious cycle - notably observed among other primates as well - that is worsened by poverty, inequality, and other psychological stressors that manifest through abuse.

things I’m sick of

I’m sick of people comparing the holocaust to things.

I’m sick of people comparing slavery to things.

Stop comparing abortion to the holocaust! It isn’t the same thing!!! Torture and execution of an entire group of people based on their religion and heritage is not in any way the same as the abortion of an undeveloped bundle of cells. It’s not the same! It’s insulting.

Half of my family. Did you read that? HALF of my entire family. Murdered in the holocaust. Taken from their homes and kept in camps and murdered. You’re trying to tell me that their worth is the same as a bundle of cells with no self awareness? You’re trying to tell me that their pain is the same?

The meat industry is not slavery. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Slavery in America was the *enslavement* of an entire group of people stolen from their homes to be human slaves for 500+ years. Yes I realize that I used the word slave a lot, let’s look at the definition, shall we?

a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bond servant.

A person. A person with self-awareness, a culture, a family, a thinking mind. One of our own - forced to work without pay, tortured, forced to breed, raped, often murdered. This is not in any way the same as the meat industry.

Stop fucking comparing these struggles with things that undermine their deep sociological consequences.

I am fucking sick of seeing late-term abortion pictures (that occur appx 2% of the time and only when medically necessary) juxtaposed to photos of the MASS GRAVES of my people, who were tortured, stripped, experimented on, and gassed. Just because you are a religious nut who would have likely survived that hell does not give you the right to make that comparison. I’m pro-choice, obviously but even if I felt abortion was wrong…that comparison is STILL WRONG.

I am white so I can’t say I know better than the black community but… I’m pretty positive that I’m right when I say it’s fucking insensitive to compare slavery to cattle farming. Do NOT compare an entire, whole, human being to cattle. Just because you are a privileged vegan who can afford that lifestyle does not give you the right to make shitty, unfounded, offensive comparisons.

Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you.
